FIGHT FOR OUR FUTURE

Help Sustain the Black Youth Healing Arts Center and Irreducible Grace Foundation

BE BRAVE

Today, we are seeking brave donors who want to fight back against the brash executive orders aimed at curtailing the grants, funding opportunities, and institutional support fueling effective programming for youth of color. IGF is currently faced with an unprecedented budget shortfall of nearly $500,000 for our 2025 budget year, which extends through December 31, 2025.

Your donation both supports our programming and serves as direct resistance to unjust systemic forces opposing the amazing work being done to lift up our communities. Learn more about the foundation we’ve built and how our programming has thrived in St. Paul, Minnesota below.

46% of our participants are under 24 years old.

Our participants come from all over the Twin Cities. Over 50% are from St. Paul neighborhoods.

OUR WORK

At a time when young people describe the world as “scary”, spaces such as ours are more important than ever. When participants are asked to describe why they return to the BYHAC, over 66% state it is because they “feel connected to community,” while 52% state that they feel their “healing journey is prioritized at IGF.”

Numerous studies cite the physical and mental health benefits of art throughout all stages of life. In a 2023, American Medical Association interview with psychiatrist Dr. Frank Clark, he discussed the intersectionality of art and mental health and cited the benefits of creating art as not only reducing stress, but also improving self-esteem and concentration.

The African Diaspora is the root of our programming and provides space for youth and elders alike to learn ancestral traditions, skills, and knowledge. Community Elders lead our sewing, dance, and many of our arts programs sharing their wisdom and skills with the younger generations. These cultural connections are vital to the wellbeing of our youth. The mental health disparities between Black youth and white youth are well documented. However, studies show that a strong sense of cultural identity and connectedness to community are protective factors against suicide thus emphasizing the need for culturally affirming programs such as those which we offer.

IGF provides not only a safe space, but a space where the integration of the arts with mindfulness practices helps participants learn new ways to deal with stress and find support to help them navigate those challenges. For our participants, having a safe space where healing is not only supported and prioritized, but where they learn tools to metabolize trauma and daily stressors is vital to their overall health and well-being.
